I feel the time is right: Thank you, football

Pedro Rodríguez has announced his retirement from professional football. At the age of 39, speaking from Camp Nou—the stadium where his journey began and where he established himself as one of the world's best players—he announced his final farewell: “Today I return to where it all began, to close a wonderful chapter. I feel the time is right.”

“I still remember the noise. Thousands of people in the stands and a 20-year-old kid from Tenerife waiting on the sideline. Right there. That day, I stepped onto a football pitch and opened the door to a different life. At that moment, I couldn't imagine what was to come. It all started on a pitch on my home island of Tenerife, with a ball I never let go of. Being part of the greatest team in history was a huge honour. Being part of the best Barça side ever was a privilege. We won everything. And we amazed the world. My heart will always be Culer.”

“And one day—I could hardly believe it—I became a world champion and a starter in a World Cup final. London taught me how to start from scratch, discover a new culture, and grow as a person. And Italy... Italy touched my heart. I arrived as a veteran, and they treated me like a son. Today I return to where it all began, to close a wonderful chapter. I feel the time is right. Thank you to my teammates; the best part wasn't the trophies—it was you.”

“Thank you to the clubs that opened their doors to me. Thank you to the coaches who believed in me. Thank you to the fans for so much affection, and thank you to my children, my family, and my friends. Thank you, football, for making me so happy.”

Pedro was the first footballer in history to score in every club competition his team played in during a single season and win them all at the time: La Liga, the Copa del Rey, the Champions League, the Spanish Super Cup, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Club World Cup.

With FC Barcelona Pedro won five LA LIGA titles, three Champions League, three Copa del Rey, four Spanish Supercopa , three UEFA Super Cups, and two Club World Cups. In 2015, he left the Blaugrana Club to join Chelsea, where he lifted prestigious trophies such as the Premier League, FA Cup, and UEFA Europa League, before continuing his career in Italy. With the national team, he won the World Cup (2010) and the European Championship (2012).

After a brief stint at Roma, he joined Lazio for the 2021–2022 season. During his time at the club, he became a favourite among both the fans and the dressing room; in the 2024–2025 season, he delivered one of his best recent campaigns, scoring ten goals in Serie A and four in the Europa League.
