With Bologna in the ascendancy for parts of the first half, Mayoral's clever clip over the onrushing Lukas Skorupski and pass into the unguarded net proved the moment of incision that decided the contest.
With the advantage secured the Giallorossi enjoyed a much better second half display - they perhaps could and should have added to their lead. Amadou Diawara and Pedro both had chances, while Skorupski also did well to deny Bruno Peres.
In the end their were plenty of positives to take for Fonseca, however, as he managed to rotate his starting line-up in view of Thursday's Europa League return meeting with Ajax while also giving late runouts to Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Jordan Veretout and Javier Pastore.
That game on Thursday, once again at the Olimpico, gets underway at 21:00 CEST.
