Roma signs hard fought win to end 2020 (3-2)

Gianluca Mancini's header proved decisive as Roma ended 2020 with a 3-2 home victory over Cagliari on Wednesday night.

The Giallorossi had to ride a few nervy moments to clinch a final three points of the calendar year, despite goals from Jordan Veretout and Edin Dzeko.

It was Veretout who gave Paulo Fonseca's side a deserved first-half lead - only for that to be ruled out midway through the second half, as Cagliari finally equalised through Joao Pedro after a spell of sustained pressure.
But, unlike at the weekend in Bergamo, Roma would not crumble as the tide started to turn - as Rick Karsdorp drove to the byline before squaring to Dzeko to restore the advantage at a vital time.

When Mancini then headed home soon afterwards - after substitute Chris Smalling had headed back into the danger zone - there was finally a little breathing room, at least until injury time, when Pedro converted his second of the game from the penalty spot.

Roma would not be thwarted, however, holding on to clinch the win - and stay in the top four in Serie A heading in to a shortened winter break.
