Blues earn a crucial point at Old Trafford (1-1)

A Marcos Alonso goal on the stroke of half-time was enough for Chelsea to earn Blues the first point away against one of the other ‘big six’ sides this season. Pedro contributed with a crucial clearance off the line to avoid a winner by Rojo on injury time.

Juan Mata had given Manchester United an early lead in the game but unlike other similar tests this season, the Blues stayed strong and mounted a response which was rewarded when the home side’s goalkeeper David De Gea, who was already under much scrutiny coming into this game, failed to hold on to a Toni Rudiger shot and Alonso snapped up the chance.

Both sides lost players to injury in what was a fragmented second half. It was Rudiger who was forced off for the Blues but our defence, which had been given problems by Romelu Lukaku in the first 45 minutes, continued to contain the Belgian after the break and although visitors made few opportunities of their own, with the offside flag frequently thwarting centre-forward Gonzalo Higuain, they deserved this draw even grateful for a late clearance off the line by Pedro.

In other seasons, today’s draw at Old Trafford might have been a set-back for a side attempting to finish in the top four but as the shaky form for all the sides around us continues, with Arsenal losing at Leicester earlier in the day, Blues' destiny remains in their own hands.

Chelsea are fourth with two games left to play, two points ahead of the Gunners and three in front of today’s opponents. Also they have a better goal difference than both, considerably so in the case of United who will finish the season without a home win against any of the top six.
