“Working well together”

With three starts and two goals to his name in pre-season already, Pedro says he is full of confidence under new manager Maurizio Sarri.

The Spaniard started once again in last night’s International Champions Cup fixture against Arsenal in Dublin as the Blues were denied victory by a last-gasp Alexandre Lacazette equaliser after Toni Rudiger had headed us into an early lead.

Pedro felt Blues should have made the most of the opportunities which came our way in the game, particularly in the first half when our former goalkeeper Petr Cech made some crucial saves to keep us at bay.

‘In the first half we played better, created a lot of chances to score and we missed a penalty,’ said the Chelsea forward.

‘We can improve but it was a very good game against Arsenal. To concede in the last minute was difficult for us but it’s a good moment for the team.’

Pedro has been one of our key performers during the pre-season campaign, playing on the right-hand-side of an attacking trio, with Alvaro Morata through the middle and 17-year-old Callum Hudson-Odoi on the left.

The attacker scored the only goal of the game against Perth Glory in our first match before following it up with another strike in the 1-1 draw against Inter Milan, and he explained what his role entails under Sarri.

‘To press really high against the central defenders and full-backs, to recover the ball quickly, attack the spaces and play between the lines,’ he said.

‘It depends on the opponent but it’s very good for me and my confidence to have a manager with this idea. We can improve a lot together but this is the right way.

‘I’m feeling very good. I’m confident on the pitch with my team-mates. I didn’t score against Arsenal but the most important thing was the teamwork. We pressed together, recovered the ball very quickly and play with very good possession to create chances, and this is the way for us for the future.’

The Blues face two more matches before our Premier League opener away at Huddersfield, starting on Sunday when we take on Manchester City at Wembley in the FA Community Shield.

‘We’ve only had three games so far but it’s been good and now we face an important match against Manchester City who are a strong team with talented players,’ said Pedro.

‘It’s very important. They were champions last season and played well. It will be a tough game for us, a massive game, but we want to win.’
