Pedro’s big jump

The figures of the player from the Canary Islands have rocketed in last months in his best season wearing the Barça shirt. So now with Pedro nobody dares to forecast. Three years ago he was dispensable in the youth team of Barça. Then Pep thought about him because he was a winger, a profile which the coach likes a lot. His first matches were seen with skepticism. ‘Pedrito’ was not the kind of nickname that foretells a project of a worldwide top player. But the player from the Canary Islands kept getting confident with goals and hard work. His progression was such that at the end of the season nobody had any doubt about his importance in the future of the team.

This season the objective was also difficult, to consolidate at the elite, to continue his progression and to get a definitive place at the starting eleven didn’t seem like an easy task. But the player from the Canary Islands is the most persistent guy of the Barcelona team. And his figures so far are even better than they were at the last season. Also his progression within the team is bigger: he contributes more than ever in the game and he even dares to play one versus one with all the confidence of the world. The goals, besides, still being as usual as his assists. So far in the League, Pedro added up 5 points, now he’s the third top scorer of the team with 9. Then, he had been in Pep’s starting eleven 10 times, nowadays 14 times. And indeed: of 18 fixtures played by his team, he hasn’t missed any match, last season he added up two absences.

That’s Pedro, he never stops. On the pitch he defines as a nine and works backwards as the best of the defenders. On the front, only Messi and Villa shoot more times than the player from the Canary Islands, 38 in total. There’s no better partner for his attacking mates, which he has given to 6 goal assists.

The player from the Canary Islands is going through a good run –he adds up 12 goals at the last 13 matches of Barcelona- and of course Guardiola is delighted with the player. “He can play in both sides and he plays a lot for his mates, because he’s supportive. He runs as the best and he’s a good guy”, says the coach. Pep, however, still frowns when some people talk about the possibilities of the player from the Canary Islands in the future editions of the Golden Ball. “No, he’s not ready to win that prize. Pedro is the best complement for these players who carry the team. He’s young and still has a long way to go. If when these players are not there, he is able to take over from them, then it will be the moment to value it”, he states.

By now, the progression of the player didn’t pass unnoticed for the Planet Football. There are a lot of managers who highlight the importance of the player. As the international press does. The famous English magazine ‘Four Four Two’ has made a list of the 100 best football players of the world. And Pedro is at the 50th place. That’s a signal of the unstoppable growing of the winger.
