Pedro: “We have been together through very difficult moments”

A pass from Iniesta and a brilliant shot of the most important player from Tenerife ended with the frustration of Mestalla, the powerlessness against the injuries, the rough time with the ugly accusations from Madrid and a long series of defamatory terms and reports. It was a goal, but also a release, a relief; a gust of happiness that lasts still. Pedrito shared it yesterday with La Opinión de Tenerife one day after his qualification for what will be his second great European final. After playing for a minute in Rome, maybe in London he will be within the starting eleven. Before, he invites us to taste this deserved satisfaction and exalt those values that leaded him here: the perseverance to overcome the obstacles, the humility to don’t forget your roots and the “respect to a way of playing” which triumphed over Real Madrid.

- How is it the day after?

A day filled with joy because the way the match went and over all because the result. We knew it was a tough eliminatory round and against a complete rival, and at the end we are happy to be at Wembley. Definitely, because a target we were eager to achieve.

- Do you feel more tired or relieved?

We felt very tired, these matches have been very physical, very tough, with a lot of stress… but we have already achieved our target, which was to arrive to the final and that also brings joy. Anyway, now we have to focus on the league title, so that we don’t loose it.

- Did you have bad times these last weeks? You have had some bad news: your injury, the defeat at Mestalla, some accusations coming from Madrid…

These months I have had some bad moments, yes, over all because the injury, the upsets I was carrying, but it’s true it was also because the defeat at the Cup. Anyway, at the end we got our objective and we are happy. And not only because we are in the final, but also because of Abi, because he’s back with us.

- You were the main character because your goal and Abidal also because he returned to the pitch. He was the other winner of the night. How is he doing?

He is very happy too, but we can’t forget that this hasn’t ended yet. Now we have to rest and get ready for the match against Espanyol that will be tough after what happened last Wednesday.

- The last have been very competitive matches at the pitch but also out, with a lot of stress and inappropriate statements. I imagine that some of them might have upset you.

Yes. But the coach handles that very well. We are very close; we have a nice dressing room. And we have been together before very tough moments. That’s how we move everything forward, with unity and respect our way of playing.

- During the last days, and especially after the first leg match you have been accused of faking, of acting… What do you have to say about it?

They have their arguments. I’ve said I’m calm. In all the moves they talk about there were clear faults. In that sense I’m calm, but it’s not nice when you try to be honest and respect. Those things happen in football so we don’t have to roll it anymore. That’s the way it is.

- Let’s go back to a nicer issue, your goal. How do you remember it?

Like a very happy moment. It was a very quick move with a very good pass to the hole from Andrés. I controlled the ball well and also made a good shot. I was happy with that goal, against a rival as Real Madrid and at a Champions semi final.

- Guardiola said that maybe the 2-6 at the Bernabeu brought more euphoria. Even so, last Wednesday match must have been unforgettable for you. How was the celebration?

Very nice, also because the fans, that were incredible, supporting us from the first moment till the last one. I think we deserved this kind of joy. We have been better in both matches, we have played well and at the end, we are happy with the result. Anyway, I still say that we can’t stop now. The final will come the 28th, but before we have also some important league matches.

- Do you feel with the distance the admiration and affection people in Canarias have for you? What can you say to the people that support you at the Islands?

Of course in happy moments as now I thank also the people from Tenerife and Canary Islands for their support, affection, and the trust they put on me… For me is a pride to be from Tenerife and from the Canary Islands. I hope we continue this way to thank with our way of playing the energy they transmit to me.
